City Council Meeting Roundup

On Tuesday, December 10th, the City Council held its regular monthly meeting. Here are the meeting highlights to help keep you informed.

  • Renewal of the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP) Interlocal Agreement (ILA) was approved – The City of Normandy Park participates in the four-city Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP) staff-level working group. This group was formed by an ILA adopted in March 2018 by member cities Normandy Park, Des Moines, Burien, and SeaTac. The purpose of the ILA is for the cities to establish and operate a process for the review and analysis of the environmental process, impacts, and concerns related to the airport’s SAMP.
  • Approval of the Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) Grant for the overlay of a portion of Marine View Drive – The City has been awarded a grant from TIB to overlay Marine View Drive between SW 197th St and Edgecliff Drive SW. This project will also include the construction of 4 ADA ramps, minor Stormwater improvements, and reconstruction of approximately 200 LF of sidewalk. Project costs are estimated at $360,000. The TIB grant will fund 85% of the project, with the remaining 15% being funded through the City’s Real Estate Excise Tax (REET) and Stormwater funds.
  • Approval of a contract with G&O for Stormwater Improvements at SW 166th & 3rd Avenue SW – The Council approved a contract with G&O for design services related to the Stormwater Improvement Project located at SW 166th and 3rd Ave SW. This project will include designing and bidding plans for a new stormwater facility to accommodate stormwater runoff in the Bonnie Wood neighborhood.
  • Approval of the 2025 Legislative Agenda – Working with other legislative bodies and expressing the city’s priorities helps move the city’s goals forward. Therefore, the City Council approves a Legislative Agenda each year to express its priorities for the upcoming year. For 2025, the agenda focuses on public safety, revising the property tax cap, behavioral health resources, the environment, and transportation.
  • Discussion of the Proposed Sports Courts – The City Council has been exploring the possibility of building three courts at City Hall Park. Two would be located on the north side of City Hall and would be designed to focus on pickleball. The third court would be a refurbishment of the basketball courts into one court with some additional parking on the south side of City Hall. During the last several weeks, the City has asked residents for feedback on this proposed project. At Tuesday’s meeting, the City Council heard a report from staff and from interested residents who attended the meeting. After hearing the feedback, the City Council decided to only move forward with the basketball portion of the project. The City would like to thank all the residents who responded and expressed their support and concerns. Keep your eye out for an improved basketball court and additional parking at City Hall Park in late 2025.

I encourage you to watch the meeting recording to learn more about these and other topics.

Phone scams continue to victimize thousands of people, stealing billions of dollars each year. Knowledge is prevention! In the past, this class has targeted adults 60+, yet we have seen an increase in younger adults becoming victims. Everyone can benefit from this information, and everyone is encouraged to attend.

If you have any questions about this or other City topics, please email me at aarrington@normandyparkwa.gov. Have a great week!
