City Council Meeting Roundup

On Tuesday, May 13th, the City Council held its regular monthly meeting. Here are the meeting highlights to help keep you informed.

  • Arts Commission Annual Presentation – Arts Commission members Chair Nadia Counter and Lawrence Peryer updated the City Council on the Commission’s work plan. We learned about past successes and the year ahead. Between meeting and event hours, members of the Arts Commission have volunteered for more than 280 hours this past year, promoting the arts in Normandy Park.
  • Proclamation for Safe Boating Week – In recognition of the importance of safe boating practices, the City Council declared the week of May 17th – 23rd, as Safe Boating Week
  • Proclamation for Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week – To honor the selflessness of our law enforcement officers and their families, the City Council declared May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 11th – 17th as National Police Week.
  • Proclamation for Affordable Housing Week – To recognize the importance of affordable housing, the City Council declared the week of May 12th – 16th as Affordable Housing Week in Normandy Park.
  • Resolution approving the South King Housing and Homelessness Partners (SKHHP) 2026 Work Program and 2026 Operating Budget – SKHHP was established through an interlocal agreement between nine South King County cities and King County to work together to increase affordable housing options for South King County residents. Every year, SKHHP prepares an annual work plan and budget for the upcoming year to guide its work. After hearing more, the City Council approved SKHHP’s 2026 annual budget and work plan.
  • Resident Ron Ebbers was reappointed to the Parks Commission – The Parks Commission is a volunteer board responsible for making recommendations for our Parks. The City Council reappointed resident Ron for another term on the Parks Commission.
  • Recommendation to award a contract for the 2025 Projects – The City establishes a list of projects needed to improve Normandy Park each year. The 2025 project consists of six sites throughout the City. It will include stormwater conveyance system improvements, sidewalk and ADA ramp repairs, guardrail installation, pavement repair at the City Shop, paving the parking lot at Marine View Park, and City Hall basketball court and parking improvements. The cost for all these improvements is $841,366.
  • Resolution No. 1018 amending the 2025 City of Normandy Park Fee Schedule – The City Council amended its Fee Resolution to include language allowing staff to create fees for special Parks & Recreation programs that arise throughout the year. As with all our fees, they will only cover the program’s costs.
  • Approval of additional grant funding for Nature Trails Park – In February, the City Council accepted a grant to restore Nature Trails Park in the amount of $45,450. This grant helps remove ivy and invasive species from two acres of the northwest corner of Nature Trails Park. Working with the granting agency, the City has recently received more grant funding, in the amount of $45,450. The City Council accepted this funding, allowing us to double the work in the park.
  • Approval of a contract amendment for the Nature Trails Park Forest Restoration Work – With the additional grant money from the item above, the City Council amended the contract with Hanson Tree Services to perform the extra work at Nature Trails Park
  • Approval of electrical and mechanical contracts to complete the generator installation at City Hall – City Hall is getting a new generator. The City Council approved two agreements to complete the needed electrical and mechanical work related to the project. The costs will not exceed $30,000.

If you want to learn more about these topics, I encourage you to watch the meeting.

Working Together for Safer Streets: Normandy Park’s Local Road Safety Plan
The City of Normandy Park is taking an important step toward making our roads safer for everyone. As part of the City Council’s 2025 Goals, we’re developing a Local Road Safety Plan (LRSP) to improve safety along our major, federally classified roadways. I want to share what this plan is all about—and how it will benefit our community. What Is a Local Road Safety Plan? A Local Road Safety Plan, or LRSP, is a strategic roadmap that cities use to identify safety issues and take action to reduce serious crashes and save lives. Each LRSP is unique, designed specifically for the community it serves, using local data and best practices in traffic safety. The plan examines where accidents occur or are likely to happen, and what we can do to prevent them. It helps us move away from one-size-fits-all solutions and instead focuses on what will truly make a difference for Normandy Park.
