City Council Roundup

On Tuesday, April 14th, the Normandy Park City Council held its regular monthly meeting. Below is a summary of key discussions and approved actions.

Celebrating and Preserving Our Trees – The Council received a presentation on the City’s Heritage Tree Program, which recognizes and protects significant trees throughout Normandy Park. Trees are a defining part of our community, and this program helps preserve that character while educating the public. Learn more and explore designated trees on the City’s website.

Presentation from WM (Waste Management) – Representatives from WM shared an overview of local service operations, the City’s waste stream, community outreach efforts, and upcoming service information.

Honoring Our Dispatchers – The Council proclaimed April 12th – 18th, 2026, as Telecommunications Week, recognizing the critical role dispatchers play in responding to emergencies and supporting public safety in our community.

Arbor Day Proclamation – Saturday, April 25th, was declared Arbor Day in Normandy Park. Join us at Marvista Park on this day between 10:00 am and noon to celebrate and connect with the community.

Resolution No. 1032 was approved to authorize the purchase of a pre-owned Vactor Truck – To provide quality service to our residents, we must have effective equipment. An important piece of equipment is our Vactor Truck, which combines high-pressure water jetting and powerful vacuum suction to clean and maintain storm drains and catch basins. The current truck is a 2003 with high hours. The City has located a newer unit that will provide reliable service in the future. With this approval, we have obtained a used Vactor Truck at substantial cost savings vs. buying a new unit.

Award the Contract for the 2026 Projects – Each year, the City identifies projects that are needed throughout the City. In 2026, projects consist of seven sites throughout the City and include stormwater conveyance system improvements, sidewalk and ADA ramp repairs, curb and gutter repair, pavement repairs, and drainage improvements at City Hall Park. The City Council approved the contract to complete these projects, which are expected to begin next month.

Approval of the Contract for tree removal at City Hall – Five sweet gum trees, located within the right-of-way in front of City Hall Park, need to be removed. These trees were topped decades ago, resulting in them growing abnormally large branches just below the point of topping. Staff met with arborists several times regarding the trees and have concluded that the best practice is to remove them. This was a difficult decision, but it is needed for public safety. The removal of these trees has been scheduled for early May. The City is committed to maintaining our tree canopy and will replace these trees in the fall. The type of tree(s) will be decided with the help of the Parks Commission.
