New Procedure for Right of Way Use Permits

Throughout any community, you will find rights-of-way. Right-of-Way (ROW) is defined as all public streets and property granted, reserved, held, or dedicated to public use for streets, walkways, bikeways, and utilities. In Normandy Park, homeowners are responsible for maintaining the ROW adjacent to their property and certain ROW work does require a permit. Activities that trigger the need for a permit include construction, filling, grading, storage, or tree removal. To keep you informed, I wanted to let you know about a change in the permitting process.

Effective September 5^th, all Right-of-Way use permit applications will only be accepted through the City’s SmartGov online Permit Portal. “Paper” permit applications received via email will no longer be accepted. SmartGov is the new online permitting system that provides a streamlined and effective process for application intake, completeness check, payment, and issuance.

Shuttle Bus Stop in Normandy Park for Active Adults

The City partners with the City of Des Moines to provide activities and services to our senior residents. This partnership has led to a new service – the Des Moines Activity Center now offers a convenient shuttle in Normandy Park. You can catch a free ride to one of their fun adventures or field trips from Normandy Park. Call (206) 878-1642 to reserve a seat on the shuttle. Shuttle service is only available by advanced request.

Join Family Foresters in Nist Park

Join the Family Foresters for multiple tree planting and noxious weed removal events at E.J. Nist Park in Normandy Park. Five family-friendly events will be hosted running from September to March 2024 on the Second Saturdays from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Tools, supplies, trees/shrubs, education, and snacks will be provided for these fun events. September & October dates will focus on noxious weed removal, saving established trees covered in ivy, and preparing the ground for planting. Tree planting will happen during the November, February, and March events when the ground has more moisture to support new plants and trees.

Those who attend will learn:
• How to help the environment
• Best practices for planting trees and shrubs
• How you can impact air quality and climate change
• Have fun! We have themed coloring and crafts at every event
• Join the Environmental Science Center for a new lesson at each event
