Local members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are teaming up with the City of Normandy Park and the Normandy Park Community Club to provide shore-side safety conversations with local residents who enjoy paddle sports or who are considering getting into these activities this coming season.
Drop by the picnic area adjacent to the boat launch at the Normandy Park Community Club (The Cove) anytime between 10-noon on May 11th. Coast Guard Auxiliary boating education instructors will be on hand to go over required and recommended safety gear and provide tips for enjoying paddling safely, whether you are brand new to paddling or ready to up your safety game by getting a hand-held marine radio or other gear. Feel free to bring your paddle craft, life jackets, and other gear for an optional courtesy safety check. Or just stop by to chat. All participants will receive free “If Found” stickers and safety whistles.
Note that the Coast Guard Auxiliary also provides courtesy vessel safety checks (VSCs) for recreational boats from paddle craft and boats up to 65′ in length. Vessel examiners will be happy to meet you at your boat at a convenient time to go over the required and recommended safety equipment, provide safe boating tips and answers to your questions. If you don’t pass, don’t worry! You will receive a list of items you need to correct, and you can call for a recheck when you’re ready. To request a VSC, simply fill out this simple online form and a local vessel examiner will contact you: https://wow.uscgaux.info/i_want_a_vsc/index.php
