City Council will select the Mayor & Deputy Mayor at the January 9th Meeting

At the regular City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 9th, after our newly elected Councilmembers are sworn in, the City Council will select the mayor and deputy mayor for 2024 and 2025.

Sometimes, residents are surprised that the Normandy Park Mayor is appointed rather than elected. That is because Normandy Park is a council-manager form of government where the City Council appoints the mayor, and the city manager handles the administrative responsibilities. Fun fact: while most of the cities in Washington have a mayor-council form of government, the vast majority of cities that have incorporated or successfully changed form of government since 1970 have adopted the council-manager system.

Per the Revised Code of Washington State, cities with a Council-Manager form of government will biennially choose a chair from among their members at the first meeting of the new council. The council chair shall have the title of mayor and preside over council meetings. In addition to the powers conferred upon them as mayor, they shall continue to have all the rights, privileges, and immunities of a council member.

Other business at Tuesday’s meeting will include accepting a grant to help develop a new City Park, approving additional work needed for a sidewalk project on First Avenue, and making City appointments to various Council and Regional Committees. Please join us on Tuesday, January 9th, 2024 at 7:00 p.m.
