Update on the Civic Center
The City Council continues to move forward with the development of a new Civic Center. At its June 8 meeting, the City Council heard a presentation from residents on the possibility of a recreation facility that would be located in Marvista Park. The presentation was well received and contained some fantastic ideas. After discussion, the City Council directed staff to continue working with the City’s consultant to amend the Civic Center at City Hall Park. Our goal is to adjust the proposed design of City Hall, Police Building, and Recreation Center to be constructed within the designated budget.
The City Council will review the revised design at its September 14 meeting. If the City Council approves, we will work to move forward with design. If the design does not meet the community’s needs, the City Council will consider other options. If you are interested in learning more about this project, join us in the Facilities Committee Meeting. The next one is scheduled for July 1 at 5:00 pm. If you are interested in current and future recreation programming for the City please come to the next Park Commission meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 16 at 7:00 pm.
Check out the City’s Events Calendar for all meeting information https://normandyparkwa.gov/events/.
Shakespeare in the Park 2021 is coming!

- Saturday, July 31 @ 7: 30 PM:Backyard Bard, an evening of abbreviated versions of The Tempest and Twelfth Night
- Saturday, August 7 @ 7:30 PM: Midsummer Night’s Dream
Join us in Marvista Park for this free event; visit https://greenstage.org/shakespeare-in-the-park-3/ for more information. Distancing of family groups on the grass and masks may be required depending on the state COVID-19 regulations at that time. Thanks to the Normandy Park Arts Commission and the Washington State Arts Commission for their support.
Police Department
The Normandy Park Police Department is currently testing another less-lethal tool called the Bolawrap. The Bolawrap can be used on noncompliant subjects who are refusing to follow voice commands and pose a potential threat. It is a way to minimize risk to both Officers and suspects. Please watch the video to see it in action:

We are always looking for ways to deliver professional police services to our community while at the same time limiting the risk with the sanctity of human life always at the forefront.
Public Works Department Activity Highlights:
- Recently removed a hazardous tree from Nature Trails Park.
- We are conducting Stormwater inspections in the Northern half of the City. Our NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit requires biannual inspections for all catch basins. Inspections will likely continue through July. Any needed repairs and/or maintenance identified during inspections will be performed by the Public Work crews in August and September.
- A new Memorial Bench has been installed in Marvista Park near the existing gazebo. A big thank you to the resident who donated the bench as a Mother’s Day gift to her elderly mom who takes daily walks through the park. Take a seat on Boo’s Bench next time you’re in the area.
Community Development Department:
As you may know, the City’s Community Development Department is short staffed currently. The City appreciates your willingness to cooperate and engage with patience as we balance high permit workload with the most effective resource allocations available. We recognize the value of our permitting process as a component of home investment and thank the community for working together as we manage these vital processes.

Have a great week!
