Normandy Park Civic Center

At its December 14th meeting, the Normandy Park City Council will review and hopefully approve the site plan and renderings for the new City Civic Center. The next step in moving the Civic Center forward is to approve a contract with our architectural firm for the design of the new facility, which is planned for early 2022.

As this project moves forward, I wanted to share the plan with you. Click on this link to see the proposed Site Plan. The Facilities Committee and the City Council have successfully developed a facility plan that creates a public space that encourages and supports the community coming together. Some interesting elements being proposed include:

  • Rooms will have multipurpose uses. The City wants all areas of the Civic Center to be utilized as much as possible. Examples include:
    • The fitness/dance studio will also serve as a stage for the gymnasium.
    • The City Council Chambers will be an open room that easily connects to the lobby.
    • The Community Room will open into the great lawn and lobby area.
  • A new basketball half-court will be installed near the west parking lot.
  • The Preschool will have an improved classroom area and support space.
  • The playground will be located along the main circulation area and will be in a more visually prominent location.
  • The playground and a new picnic table area will overlook the south ballfields, where parents can sit overlooking both the fields and the playground. This location is still easily accessible from the Preschool along a safe, non-vehicular path.
  • A new fire pit will be installed near the basketball half-court.

This is not a comprehensive list, so please tune in to the meeting on December 14th to learn more about this exciting project coming to Normandy Park.

Thank You for Supporting Normandy Park’s Blood Donor Day

The City of Normandy Park partnered with Bloodworks Northwest once again to run another pop-up blood donation event on Monday, December 6th, and Tuesday, December 7th  in the City Council Chambers. And it was a great success! The two-day blood drive resulted in the collection of 60 units. This will be a huge help in providing blood needed to patients at local hospitals during the holiday season. Thank you to the residents of Normandy Park for supporting this event!

Toys for Tots – Last Week

The Toys for Tots collection continues at City Hall for one more week. You can still bring your unwrapped toys to City Hall until December 14th.  The collection box is in the lobby area. Please join the Police Department and City Staff as we work to ensure all children in King County have a Happy Holiday!

Scholarship Opportunity for Graduating Seniors

The City of Normandy Park is now accepting applications for the AWC Center for Quality Communities $1,500 Scholarship Opportunity. The scholarship is available through a statewide competitive process for students who are actively engaged in their city government and/or community and plan to attend post-secondary school in fall 2022.

To be eligible, students must be graduating from high school, home school, or receiving a GED in spring/summer 2022; plan to continue their education at an accredited college or trade school in the 2022-2023 academic year on a half-time or more basis, and have been involved with a city government or with a community/school leadership activity.

The Normandy Park Education Committee will review applications and recommend a local scholarship nominee to the City Council for final approval. If you are interested, visit the city website [link to website]  for the application form and additional information. Once completed, please submit your application, signed release form, letter of recommendation, and essay to Brooks Wall at bwall@normandyparkwa.gov by email or mail to City Hall at 801 SW 174th SW, Normandy Park, WA 98166 by December 29th at 2:00 pm.

2020 Census Data

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is used by the U.S. Census Bureau to classify businesses for data purposes. Industry types include construction, retail trade, public administration, and many more. The NAICS was developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico and allows for a high level of comparability in business statistics between local governments and North American countries.

The bar graph below breaks down what industries Normandy Park residents work in. If you live in Normandy Park, you are most likely going to belong to the educational services, health care, and social assistance industry type and least likely to belong to the agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, and mining industry type. To find out more information on a particular industry type, visit the NAICS website. Which industry type do you belong to? Based on the data found in this link, do you think a lot of your neighbors work in the same industry? Let us know what you see in the data!

If you have any questions, please get in touch with me at aarrington@normandyparkwa.gov. Have a great week!

“As this project moves forward, I wanted to share the plan with you.”
