A Look Back at 2022 

As we get ready to ring in the new year, I wanted to take some time to reflect on some of the events that occurred at City Hall in 2022. This list would not have been possible without the strong leadership of the City Council, the hard work of City staff, and the support of the residents of Normandy Park. Thank you all for making Normandy Park a better place. Here are some of the 2022 highlights: 

• Residents voted on Proposition #1 to fund a new Civic Center – In August, a proposition needed to construct the proposed Civic Center failed. The next step for the City is to better understand the “why” behind your vote, whether you supported or opposed it. That is why we are currently asking residents to take a brief survey on this issue. The City Council will review the information gathered at its January retreat. Your participation is essential and will help us determine and communicate a plan moving forward. 
• City Council Filled Vacancy –  On September 27th, the City Council selected Sheri Healey to fill the vacancy created by Councilmember Earnest Thompson’s passing. Sheri has been a resident of Normandy Park for over 24 years and brings a historical aspect to the table and the ability to see both sides of an issue.  

• New Playground equipment installed at Nist Park – If you have visited Nist Park lately, you will have noticed some substantial improvements. Specifically, the park has a new swing set, tire swing, and a dual in-ground slide. These new features will enhance this wonderful park that already offers excellent winter sledding, picnic tables, and walking trails. As in typical Normandy Park style, these improvements are a reality because of the community’s support. 
• Heritage Tree Program Approved – The City Council officially established a Heritage Tree Program with the purpose of increasing public awareness of trees. We want to draw attention to and protect our unique and significant heritage trees. This is important since all our trees are  key components of the city’s unique character and sense of place. • Hosting Successful Community Celebrations – The City hosted several events in 2022. These events are fun and family-friendly to bring the entire community together. Some events hosted include the Arbor Day Celebration, Summer Concert Series, Autumn Art Festival, Fall Frolic, Donuts for Veterans, and National Night Out. We are planning to continue to build these events and maybe offer a few more in the future. 
• A new City park is coming – A contract to purchase a parcel needed for Walker/Sequoia Creek Project was approved. This exciting project will create a new open space park that will provide the only public access to salmon spawning within Normandy Park.  
• City’s general fund achieved debt-free status – In early December 2022, the City made its last payment on the general obligation bond that was issued in 2013 related to work that occurred on First Avenue. The city worked hard and set aside funding to pay this debt ten years early. 

• The City’s 2023-2024 Budget was approved – Highlights of the approved budget include an additional Police Officer position, establishing a Building Replacement Fund to support the construction of new buildings in the future, funding the construction of a new section of sidewalk along First Avenue, and maintaining the city’s Strategic Reserve at $2,000,000.

City Council Vacancy 

The City of Normandy Park is seeking applicants to fill the vacancy of City Council Position #5. This temporary appointment will expire upon certification of the November 2023 General Election.
