City Council Meeting Roundup
On Tuesday, February 13th, the City Council had its regular monthly meeting. To help keep you informed, here are the meeting highlights.
- Chief Dan Yourkoski administered the Ceremonial Oath to Police Officer Malcolm Lee.
- Parks & Recreation Manager Aimee Lloyd made a presentation on the City’s Heritage Tree Program. Trees are a vital asset to any community, and Normandy Park has embraced this value. We have some of the highest amount of tree canopy in King County. To celebrate, promote, preserve, and educate the public about this great asset, the city has established a Heritage Tree Program. If you know of a unique or special tree in Normandy Park, consider nominating it for Heritage Tree designation. For more information on this program and to check out the trees that have already been designated, visit the City’s website.
- The City Council approved Resolution #1006, which adopted the 2024 Normandy Park 2044 Comprehensive Plan and Development Regulations Docket. The docket is a list of topics that are proposed for amendment.
If you want to learn more about these items, I encourage you to watch the meeting recording.
Upcoming King County Repair Events
Did you know that King County offers free community repair events, where skilled volunteers try to repair and mend your small household and personal items? Their repair events season runs from March through September. For any of these events, there are no reservations or appointments, but an advance sign-up gives priority over walk-ins or second items. To request an advance sign-up for a specific event, or if you have questions, contact event coordinator Tom at tom.watson@kingcounty.gov or at 206-477-4481. Emails are best. Specify the event and the kind of item you have. The Repair Events that have been scheduled include:
- Tuesday, March 19, 3:00 – 6:00 pm, Des Moines Library
- Sunday, April 21, 1:30 – 4:30 pm, Burien Library
- Saturday, June 8, 1:30 – 4:30 pm, Kirkland Library
- Saturday, August 10, 1:30 – 4:30 pm, Skyway Library
Items that can potentially be worked on at these repair events include household and personal items that are small enough to be carried in by one person, including certain electronics, small furniture, and clothing/textiles. No cell phones, tablet computers or microwaves. Nothing that uses gasoline. No knife or tool sharpening. No lengthy reconstructive repairs. No major clothing alterations. Items brought in for repair, including clothing, must be clean. They may decline to work on any item – in advance or at the event – depending on the item, the type of repair needed, the fixers available, or for other reasons. For more detail, visit King County’s webpage. Thanks, everyone, for your support of repair, which reduces waste and conserves resources!
