Special Meeting to Appoint a New Councilmember
On February 6th, the City Council will hold a special meeting to fill a vacancy on the City Council. As you probably read in the last City Scene publication, Councilmember Michelle Sipes-Marvin resigned in January due to personal obligations. Filling a Council vacancy is essential, so I wanted to tell you more about the process.
When a vacancy occurs on the Council, more than six months before the next election, the City Council is responsible for appointing someone to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term. As the responsible party, the City Council is also responsible for determining the review and selection process to use. The process currently used by Normandy Park is that interested residents submit an application expressing their interest, the City Council interviews the candidates, and then makes the final appointment. The City Council needs to be timely in its selection process because they have 90 days to fill vacancies. If this action is not completed in time, the City Council loses its authority, and King County Council will then have the authority to make the appointment.
On Monday, February 6th, the City Council will interview three applicants for City Council position #5. The meeting is open to the public. I encourage you to review the agenda to learn more about the applicants.
Proposition #1 Survey will close on February 15th
To help the City better understand the “why” behind your vote on Proposition #1, whether you supported or opposed it, we are asking residents to take a survey on this issue. Your participation is essential and will help us determine and communicate a plan moving forward. If you have not already, please take this brief survey.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with me at aarrington@normandyparkwa.gov. Have a great week!

The SAMP is the blueprint for changes at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to meet future forecasted demand. The master plan process was completed in 2018 and identified 31 Near-Term Projects (NTPs) intended to serve 56 million annual passengers as well as flights and cargo activity at an optimal level of service. For more information, visit the SAMP website.
