City’s Plan for improving Parks and Recreation
Do you know about the city’s plan for improving parks and recreation? In case you don’t, I want to talk to you about the city’s Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Plan.
The city adopted its latest PROS Plan edition in 2018 to provide a six-year guide and strategic plan for managing and enhancing park and recreation services. The PROS Plan creates a framework that will allow the city to ensure that parks, facilities, and recreation programs meet the needs of Normandy Park residents, now and into the future. If you review the PROS Plan, you will see that Normandy Park’s park system is envisioned to be ”A community programmed system of open spaces, trails, active recreation parks, and amenities that preserve Normandy Park’s natural beauty and ecology while engaging residents in a variety of healthy active and passive recreation opportunities.”
To accomplish the PROS Plan vision, all the assessment information was evaluated and used to build and prioritize a list of recommended improvements. The city uses this plan as a guide when deciding what park project to tackle next.
This important document will be discussed at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Since the adoption of the PROS Plan in 2018, some of the city’s priorities and desires have changed. Staff is now recommending the City Council direct the Parks Commission to review the current PROS Plan and recommend amendments and or adjustments, if needed, to the current document for approval. Specific areas identified for review include current Civic Center planning, a new “pump track” project, and possible improvements to a portion of Marine View Park currently fenced off and used as a public works facility (Heath property).
If interested, I encourage you to watch the City Council meeting Tuesday, February 8th at 7:00 pm. If you would like to review the entire Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan, click here.
