Recreation Programming Listen Session – July 21, 2021

Join us on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at 7:00 PM, as the Park Commission hosts its second listening session to hear from the public about what recreation programs you would like to see in Normandy Park. As a small city, we are limited in the resources that we have for these types of programs. But, by working together, we know we can create some interesting and fun programs for everyone – our youngsters and seniors co-living, co-playing, and co-recreating as one family – as one community. We cannot wait to hear your ideas!

National Night Out – August 3, 2021

After a brief one-year hiatus for the pandemic, we will resume National Night Out this year on Tuesday, August 3^rd, 5:30-7:30 at City Hall Park.  National Night Out is a national community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships. The police will supply the pizza. We are looking forward to seeing everybody!

City Council Round-Up

On Tuesday, July 13, 2021, the City Council held its regular monthly meeting. Here are the highlights of the meeting.

• Normandy Park Police Officer Erynn Mast was recognized for her life-saving efforts.
• Three residents were appointed to the PRO Committee to produce information for the voter pamphlet supporting the levy lid lift renewal that funds police services and street maintenance. While the City can only appoint three members to the PRO or CON committee, anybody can participate. If interested, please get in touch with City Clerk Brooks Wall at bwall@normandyparkwa.gov.
• The New Civic Center was discussed. This project is moving forward and will include a new City Hall, Police Department, Preschool, Studio (dance/fitness), and Community/Party Room. One area that is still under review is the actual size of the indoor gymnasium. There is interest in creating a larger gym. However, a larger gym would increase project costs outside of the designated budget. The City Council referred this topic back to the Capital Committee (responsible for recommending the designated budget) for review. More work is needed on this project, and the City is always interested in having input from the public. Meetings, including the advisory committees, are open to the public. Watch the City’s meeting calendar and join in on the discussion.
• The City Council approved a contract for an art sculpture to be installed in Nist Park. The statue will be of a horse and should be installed by the end of the year.
• The City Council agreed to have a special meeting on July 27th and a workshop on August 24^th.
• The City is interested in obtaining a Tree City USA designation. This designation will bring a fun and educational program that will help us celebrate trees. The focus of this program will be on the trees found on public property (not private). Please stay tuned as we move forward with this program.

New Sign Code Amendments Title 18.30 and Temporary Signs

It’s election season again; pandemic restrictions are easing, businesses will again seek to communicate services to customers; and community organizations are advertising their events and programs. What do these three issues have in common? Temporary signs!! The rules for temporary signs—any sign or advertising display intended to be displayed for a limited time only—have changed. Although temporary signs on private property are not required to be permitted, such signs must still meet some code conditions. A permit is required if you want to put a temporary sign in the right-of-way, so contact Community Development for details.
