Civic Center Update

The City’s Facilities Committee met this week to continue working on the proposed Civic/Recreation Center design and great progress was made. As you are probably aware, the Facilities Committee has been working to right-size the design of the new Civic/Recreation Center as directed by the City Council. At its last meeting, consensus was reached on a recommended facility that includes a variety of areas that will allow multiple programming opportunities. The Committee and staff will be presenting this recommendation at the July 13th City Council Meeting.

In summary, the Committee is recommending the new Civic Center include:

  • City Hall: 7,059 square feet with an estimated cost of $4,235,184
  • Police Facility: 5,030 square feet with an estimated cost of $3,018,254
  • Preschool: 1,450 square feet with an estimated cost of $870,005
  • Civic/Recreation Center: 5,173* square feet with an estimated cost of $3,103,531

*This space includes the Lobby / Studio (dance/fitness) / Community/Party Room / Restrooms / Storage / Infrastructure

The remaining priority element for the new Civic/Recreation Center is the indoor gymnasium. Committee members agreed that an indoor gymnasium was important and wanted to be certain we constructed an optimal sized gym. Committee members had some hard work since they were trying to get as much space possible while being mindful of the proposed $13,000,000 construction budget. Members understood that if the City wants to increase the size of the current gym and maintain the space mentioned above, the construction budget will need to be increased. That lead to the decision to present the proposed plan, with some options for the gymnasium, to the City Council.

The following three options for a gym are being forwarded to the City Council:

  • Option A – 3,200 Sq. Ft Gym: Would bring the total construction costs to $13,146,974
  • Option B – 4,000 Sq. Ft Gym: Would bring the total construction costs to $13,626,974
  • Option C – 7,000 Sq. Ft Gym: Would bring the total construction costs to $15,426,974

The Committee would like to discuss these options with the City Council, including the possibility of increasing the $13,000,000 construction budget to accommodate either Option B or Option C.

This is an exciting and important project for the City. I want to encourage you to join in the July 13th City Council Meeting (on Zoom) to learn more. If you are unable to make the meeting, please contact me. I would be happy to share more information and answer any of your questions. You are welcome to call me (206.248.8246) or email me (aarrington@normandyparkwa.gov) anytime.

Thank you to Officer Erynn Mast for her life saving efforts!

On May 26, 2021, Normandy Park Police Officers were dispatched along with the Fire Department for a CPR in progress call at a residence in the 1400 block SW Shorebrook Drive.  Officer Mast and other officers arrived on scene prior to fire personnel.  Officer Mast immediately took charge of the scene.  Officer Mast, who has previous training as an EMT, quickly determined the individual was not breathing and had no pulse.  She immediately moved the subject to the floor and began chest compressions.  She then directed other Officers to attach the automated external defibrillator (AED) to the subject while she continued chest compressions.  A shock was advised and delivered upon which time Officer Mast immediately resumed chest compressions.  Despite being exhausted from continuous chest compressions, Officer Mast continued until the Fire department and Medic one arrived and took over the life-saving measures. Fire personnel were able to get the patient stabilized and transported to the hospital. Happy to report that this Normandy Park resident is doing well. Join us at the July 13th City Council meeting as we recognize Officer Mast for her life-saving efforts.

New Development in Normandy Park

You may have noticed some construction work going on at 117 SW Normandy Road (across from QFC). This site clearing and preparation is for the Sapphire on Normandy Road development. The project was fully reviewed over the course of the last year, including properly noticed public comment and public testimony in a hearing before the Hearing Examiner. Sapphire on Normandy Road is in the Mixed Use (MU) zoning district, where commercial and residential uses “mix” together. Once complete, Sapphire on Normandy Road will have 22 townhouse units in six buildings and one mixed-use building with ground floor commercial space and three residential units above.

National Night Out – August 3, 2021

Save the Date! The City of Normandy Park is happy to announce that on August 3rd, from 6-8 PM, the National Night Out at City Hall Park event will return.  The Police Department will be providing pizza.

Normandy Park Population

The state Office of Financial Management issues its annual April 1 population estimates for cities, towns and counties in Washington every June. Normandy Park continues to see the results of people choosing this quiet gem in the South Sound area, with this year’s 6,740 population estimate representing a 1.7% increase from 2020. These numbers are more than just a population estimate; they represent the state’s baseline for shared revenues, qualify us for a whole range of grants consideration, and allow us to measure ourselves alongside our colleagues in other small cities and towns in the region.

If you have any questions, please contact me at aarrington@normandyparkwa.gov. Have a great week!
