City Council Meeting Roundup

On Tuesday, June 13th, the City Council had its regular monthly meeting. Here are the meeting highlights.

  • The Normandy Park Art Commission reported on its annual work program.
  • An ordinance was approved to amend the budget. Budget amendments are needed when something occurs that was not known when the budget was initially adopted. The main reason for this amendment is related to the purchase of a parcel that will be converted into a City Park by 2027.
  • The 2024-2029 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) was adopted. The TIP is a six-year financial program that describes the schedule for obligating federal funds to state and local projects. The TIP contains funding information for all modes of transportation and is critical and required for many types of grants.
  • The City approved an agreement with the King County Library System (KCLS) to locate a book locker at City Hall. This locker will allow all types of KCLS materials to be requested and delivered to this facility. We hope that it will be installed later this summer.
  • Residents Tom Munslow and Teresa Matthews were appointed to the Planning Commission.
  • Resident Jenny Love was reappointed to the Parks Commission. All the City’s commissions, boards, and committees provide an invaluable service to the city. Their advice on various subjects aids the City Council in the decision-making process. Effective citizen participation is a valuable tool for local government.
  • A consulting contract related to solid waste with Bin There Consulting was approved. Recently, there have been many changes regarding solid waste management. With limited staff resources, many details of the City’s Franchise agreement with Waste Management have not been consistently monitored. Staff requested these additional resources to assist with Waste Management contract compliance and provide better service to our residents.
  • Ordinance #1055 was approved to amend the city’s code to comply with a state mandate to increase support for certain housing types. This ordinance also includes additional standards and regulations related to this topic to protect our neighborhoods.

If you want to learn more about these items, I encourage you to watch the meeting recording.

Music In The Park

As we enter the summer season, the Art Commission is proud to present this season of Music in the Park at Marvista Park! Every Sunday, from July 9th until August 27th, at 5:00 pm, there is free music for an hour and a half.

We have jazz, African beats and melodies, piano, theatre, and even a special event on August 27th from a group called Botanical Alchemists. All the concerts and events for Music in the Park are free and open to the public. There is also space for overflow parking at Marvista School. Bring your favorite blanket and chair and head to the park!

If you have any questions, please get in touch with me at aarrington@normandyparkwa.gov. Have a great week!

Temporary Signs in Normandy Park
From time to time, residents ask about temporary signs. I wanted to share some information about our regulations, things like what a temporary sign is, where your signs can and cannot be placed, and other regulations on signs per the City’s code. This will be a summary, so for all the rules, please see our Public Assistance Memo or contact the Community Development Department at 206.248.8260.

Demo day for the Walker and Sequoia Creek project is coming soon. The City Council approved a contract in September to clear all the structures off the property. A Cooperative Watershed Management grant from the King County Flood Control District funds this work. Once fully complete, this exciting project will benefit the environment and create a passive park for residents to enjoy.
