Normandy Park Participates in Stormfest

From June 6th – 8th, 2023, over 1,200 6th graders from Highline Public Schools attended StormFest at Des Moines Beach Park. StormFest is an annual field-based stormwater education event for all Highline Public Schools 6th grade students. At this outdoor event, students learn about their local watershed, sources of pollution, and engineering solutions to prevent stormwater pollution. Each day, students from different middle schools rotated through five hands-on lessons about stormwater and water quality taught by community volunteers, bilingual station educators, and environmental professionals.

“It’s really working for the kids,” Pacific Middle School science teacher A.J. LeCompte said. “StormFest brought what we couldn’t do in the classroom.”

StormFest was intentionally designed as an equitable educational opportunity for all students, regardless of race, ethnicity, or English language learning status. This year, StormFest had English and Spanish lessons available for students, taught by bilingual educators.

The event is put on by the StormFest Committee, which includes representatives from Burien, SeaTac, Des Moines, King County, Normandy Park, the Environmental Science Center, EnviroIssues, and Highline Public Schools. For more information about the event and the curriculum, visit burienwa.gov/stormfest

Highline Public Schools Offering Free Summer Meals for All Children

Highline Public Schools is offering free summer meals to every Highline student and all kids and teens 18 years and younger, thanks to a USDA program.  The program aims to ensure that kids in the community have access to nutritious meals during the summer months. The best part? Kids do not need to be Highline students to participate, and there are no registration requirements or forms to complete.

The free summer meals program will run from June 26th to August 1st at various locations across Highline. Families can find a convenient location near them to stop by for a delicious, ready-to-eat meal. Please note that the meals must be eaten on-site. For more information or to find a location, visit the Highline Public Schools website

Demo day for the Walker and Sequoia Creek project is coming soon. The City Council approved a contract in September to clear all the structures off the property. A Cooperative Watershed Management grant from the King County Flood Control District funds this work. Once fully complete, this exciting project will benefit the environment and create a passive park for residents to enjoy.
